Product Development Senior Specialist

R&D Engineer - OEM Upholstery plays a crucial role in product development, focusing on 3D frame design, sample creation, and technical documentation for OEM upholstery projects. This position ensures seamless translation of design concepts into manufacturable products while maintaining high-quality standards and efficiency in production.

Key Responsibilities Include

Technical Documentation (60%)

• Create comprehensive technical packets detailing 2D & 3D frame design, upholstery materials, and assembly processes.

• Document material specifications, pattern layouts, and component assembly methods.

• Maintain detailed records of sample development iterations and outcomes.

• Generate accurate measurement specifications and technical guidelines.

• Prepare technical reports on product performance and testing results.

• Communicate and document all sample changes and call outs thru the product design system (Product Data Sheet - PDS or Share point).

• Verify all Product Information Sheets (PIS) are 100% correct before being sent to LS marketing.

• Design & Draw Assembly Instructions by assembling the product to ensure correct hardware size, quantity & correct assembly steps. Forward the assembly instructions to Merchandise Associates & Brand Managers for review. Revise Assembly Instruction if necessary. Send updates to Merchandise Associates & Brand Managers to be documented in the system.

• Work with vendors to update product drawings to reflect the latest revisions and upload it into the Share-point.

Product & Sample Development (40%)

• Construct furniture samples that meet all the customer testing requirements.

• Establish a business and technical rapport with factory management and Research and Development (R&D) staff.

• Trouble shoot technical issues that arise during furniture sample development.

• Conduct sample in house testing during development to solve problematic material or construction issues and manage product test protocol.

• Work with vendors, merchandisers, and US counterparts during sample reviews by providing detailed product data sheets, sample review forms, cost sheets, color panels, and test results to achieve target costs and insure manufacturing efficiency, as well as product quality.

• Conduct pre-production meetings at each vendor; and handover to both the vendor and LS production teams all final approved sample details, to include, final product data sheet, final sample review form, final assembly instruction, a signed Master Control Sample (MCS), a signed Master Color Panel (MCP), packaging Bill of Material (BOM), CAD, any approved step panels or production control panels (PCP… usually distressing white wood panels).

• Ensure the photo sample, archive samples are built based on the approved specs and the same as mass production.

• Trouble shoot technical issues that arise during testing and production.

• Supervise any first pilot run with the vendor and LS production teams (white wood review, Open Carton Audit - OCA)

• At least 3-6 years relevant working experience as a furniture engineer,

• Product development experience in furniture and upholstery is a plus

• Understanding of raw material and construction for furniture

• Experience and knowledge, understanding of costing structure

• Understand international packing requirements (ISTA).

• Knowledgeable on the furniture testing requirements (ASTM and BIFMA).

• Knowledgeable The Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) safety requirements for children's furniture.

• Proficiency in Microsoft office (advance), Auto-CAD (advance/3D), Adobe illustrator / Photoshop is plus

• Good communication in English / Chinese is plus

• Be able to troubleshoot design and construction

• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and attention to detail

• Has a sense of urgency
