JOB PURPOSE
The Early Years Teaching Assistant works in partnership with the class teacher to support high-quality education and care for children aged 2-5 years old. The role involves nurturing children’s wellbeing, supporting play-based learning, promoting early language development, and ensuring a safe, stimulating and caring environment where every child can thrive.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
TEACHING AND LEARNING
• Support the teacher in delivering engaging, play-based learning experiences.
• Work with individuals and small groups during adult-led and child-initiated activities.
• Model and extend children’s language in English (and Vietnamese where appropriate) through play, storytelling, singing and high-quality interactions.
• Encourage curiosity, independence and problem-solving.
• Observe children’s learning and share feedback with the class teacher.
• Contribute to children’s learning portfolios through observations, photographs and short learning reflections, as directed by the class teacher.
• Support early literacy, numeracy and communication development through play.
• Read and understand weekly planning.
THE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
• Help create a safe, stimulating and well-organised Early Years classroom.
• Support the effective set-up, enhancement and maintenance of the Early Years play zones.
• Engage actively within play zones to extend children’s thinking and language.
• Ensure resources are clean, safe, developmentally appropriate, in line with our progression of skills, and inviting.
• Set up and tidy learning areas daily, both indoors and outdoors, and help prepare and organise learning resources and activities.
• Display children’s work to celebrate and value their learning.
PASTORAL CARE AND WELL BEING
• Build warm, secure and trusting relationships with children.
• Support children’s emotional regulation and social development.
• Model positive behaviour and guide children consistently in line with school policy.
• Promote independence appropriate to children’s age and stage of development.
• Support children during transitions throughout the day.
• Be vigilant for any safeguarding concerns and report immediately to the class teacher or Designated Safeguarding Lead or Deputy Designated Safeguarding Leads. All concerns must be logged in line with the school's policy.
HEALTH AND SAFETY
• Maintain constant supervision of children indoors and outdoors.
• Never leave children unattended.
• Monitor children for signs of illness, distress or injury and inform the teacher immediately.
• Follow all school safeguarding, health and safety and child protection policies.
• Support children with personal care needs, including toileting, handwashing, dressing and eating, in line with the school’s Intimate Care Policy.
• Ensure all intimate care is carried out respectfully, sensitively and in a manner that preserves the child’s dignity and privacy.
PARENT PARTNERSHIP
• Build positive, professional relationships with parents and carers.
• Support communication with parents through agreed school communication channels (e.g. sharing learning updates, key messages or reminders).
• Ensure all communication is professional, accurate and aligned with the class teacher’s guidance.
• Inform the class teacher of any significant parent conversations, concerns or messages before responding independently.
• Maintain confidentiality and follow school policies when sharing information about children.
SCHOOL CONTRIBUTION
• Attend staff meetings and professional development sessions.
• Participate in school events and Early Years activities as directed by Head TA or PLT.
• Contribute positively to the ethos and values of the school.
Qualification/ Training:
• University/ College graduate
