POSITION PURPOSE

The Demonstrator is a hands-on academic and technical support role responsible for practical instruction, equipment organization, studio preparation, and day-to-day studio management. The role supports students and academic staff in creative, design, media, film, animation, and production-related learning environments.

The Demonstrator helps students learn safe and effective practical techniques, prepares equipment and studio spaces for classes and workshops, maintains orderly equipment systems, and ensures that studios remain professional, safe, clean, and ready for teaching, independent practice, assessment, and showcase activity.

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Practical Instruction and Demonstration

• Demonstrate practical techniques, equipment use, studio workflows, and production processes during assigned classes, workshops, open studio sessions, and student support slots.

• Provide clear step-by-step instruction on safe and appropriate use of cameras, lighting, audio equipment, editing facilities, design tools, animation stations, print or production equipment, and other relevant studio resources.

• Support students as they practice technical and creative skills, troubleshoot practical problems, and prepare work for tutorials, critiques, presentations, portfolios, screenings, or exhibitions.

• Reinforce instructions, learning outcomes, and practical expectations set by Module Leaders without replacing academic teaching responsibilities.

Equipment Organization and Inventory Control

• Organize, label, store, issue, receive, and track equipment so that resources are easy to find, properly maintained, and available for scheduled teaching and student production activity.

• Manage equipment check-in/check-out procedures, booking records, loan conditions, return checks, damage reports, missing-item follow-up, and basic user guidance.

• Maintain an accurate inventory of studio, media, design, and production equipment, including accessories, consumables, cables, batteries, storage media, tools, and specialist items.

• Carry out routine equipment inspections, basic maintenance, charging, cleaning, firmware/software checks where appropriate, and escalation of repair or replacement needs.

Studio Management and Operational Readiness

• Prepare studios, labs, workshops, production spaces, and teaching rooms before scheduled sessions, ensuring that equipment, software, furniture, safety materials, and teaching resources are ready for use.

• Reset studios after classes, workshops, student productions, assessments, exhibitions, and events so that spaces remain clean, orderly, secure, and ready for the next user group.

• Coordinate room and equipment readiness with Module Leaders, Tutors, Teaching Practitioners, technicians, Programme Leads, timetabling staff, and facilities teams.

• Monitor studio use, support booking arrangements, help prevent unsafe or inappropriate use of spaces, and maintain clear operational routines for shared facilities.

Health, Safety, and Risk Management

• Induct students and staff in safe studio and equipment use, including handling, storage, manual setup, electrical safety, trip hazards, lighting safety, location production conduct, and emergency procedures where relevant.

• Apply and reinforce University health and safety procedures, risk assessment requirements, safeguarding expectations, and reporting processes.

• Identify hazards, damaged equipment, unsafe practices, missing safety materials, or unsuitable studio conditions and escalate them promptly to the appropriate manager or responsible team.

• Keep practical instruction and studio management aligned with professional conduct, equality and inclusion, data protection, academic integrity, and responsible media production standards.

Student and Staff Support

• Provide practical support to students during supervised studio time, production preparation, technical rehearsals, project development, and independent practice periods.

• Support academic staff by preparing practical materials, setting up demonstrations, assisting during workshops, and helping students apply technical instructions correctly.

• Maintain approachable, professional, and student-centred communication while setting clear boundaries around equipment care, studio rules, safety, deadlines, and shared resource use.

• Contribute to open days, portfolio reviews, student showcases, exhibitions, screenings, and recruitment events where practical studio or equipment support is required.
