Job Purpose
To work alongside the expatriate classroom teacher to inspire, encourage, and empower pupils to achieve their very best. The Co-Teacher will support the delivery of a holistic British-style education, contribute to the teaching of Vietnamese language and culture, and help create a warm, engaging, and high-expectation learning environment.
Key Responsibilities
1. Teaching and Learning Support o Work collaboratively with the expatriate class teacher to plan, prepare, and deliver engaging lessons across the Junior School curriculum. o Lead small-group or whole-class activities as agreed with the class teacher o Support children’s learning through encouragement, differentiation and targeted intervention o Teach Vietnamese language and culture lessons in line with the school’s education approach
2. Pastoral Care and Student Wellbeing o Build positive, professional relationships with pupils, acting as a role model o Support the delivery of excellent pastoral care, including break-time and after-school supervision o Always uphold the school’s safeguarding and child protection procedures
3. Classroom and Administrative Support o Prepare and set out learning resources o Assist with wall displays and classroom organisation o Undertake administrative tasks as directed by the class teacher o Liaise closely with the class teacher on pupil progress and classroom management
4. Day-to-Day Communication with Parents o Use the school’s Management Information System (MIS) and communication platforms (e.g., iSAMS, Seesaw, ClassDojo, Teams) to record pupil attendance, behaviour and achievement as directed o Support the expatriate teacher in sending clear, professional messages to parents via school systems o Translate routine communications (e.g., weekly updates, trip letters, permission forms) from English to Vietnamese to ensure all families feel included o Attend and support parent-teacher conferences, open days and school events, providing accurate and sensitive verbal translation when needed
5. Building Positive Relationships with Parents o Greet parents warmly at drop-off, pick-up and school events, modelling professionalism and warmth o Act as a cultural and linguistic bridge to reduce barriers, always maintaining confidentiality and discretion o Build trust with parents by showing genuine care for each child’s well-being and progress o Alert the class teacher or relevant leader to parental concerns raised informally, ensuring no parent feels unheard o Follow school safeguarding and communication protocols when responding to or reporting any parent-related matters
6. Holistic and Extra-Curricular Contribution o Contribute to the school’s holistic education programme, including service learning, clubs or activities o Accompany pupils on educational trips or expeditions o Bring personal skills (e.g., arts, sports, music, STEAM, or well-being) to enrich the co-curricular programme
7. Professional Conduct and Development o Attend staff meetings and professional development workshops o Maintain high standards of personal presentation, punctuality and professionalism o Demonstrate flexibility and a positive “can-do” attitude
8. Other Duties
The post holder will be expected to comply with any reasonable request from the line manager to undertake work of a similar level not specified in this job description. This role may be reviewed and varied in light of the school’s needs.
Qualifications (Essential)
· Bachelor’s degree (Education, English, Linguistics or related field)
Qualified Teacher Status in Vietnam (or equivalent local teaching qualification).
· PGCE, PGDE or international teaching qualification TEFL/CELTA (desirable).
Experience (Essential)
Experience working with children in a classroom setting
Previous experience as a teaching assistant or co-teacher in an international school
Experience working alongside expatriate teachers (Desirable)
Skills & Knowledge
Excellent spoken and written English (minimum CEFR B2/C1 or equivalent)
Native or near-native Vietnamese language ability
Experience working or studying in a Western/English-speaking environment (Desirable)
Good organisational and administrative skills
Basic IT proficiency (MS Office, email, online learning platforms)
Ability to lead extra-curricular activities (sports, arts, music, STEM, etc.)
