Atelierista at Reggio Emilia Inspired International Primary and Middle School

Position Overview

The Atelierista holds a distinctive place within the Aurora learning community — this is not simply a

traditional Visual Arts teaching position. Aurora International School of the Arts, a Reggio Emilia–inspired

international school guided by the New Zealand Curriculum, is seeking an artist and creative practitioner who

sees creative expression as a language of thinking and who embraces the concept of the Hundred

Languages of Children.

Working alongside children and teachers as a co-researcher, collaborator, provocateur and creative

practitioner, the Atelierista facilitates art and creative expression explorations for children across Primary

and Middle School, encouraging experimentation with a variety of materials. Through encounters with

materials, techniques, environments and artistic processes, the Atelierista helps children investigate ideas,

represent theories, revisit their thinking and discover new possibilities — developing artistic skills, problem-

solving abilities and critical thinking through open-ended projects.

Key Responsibilities

Atelier & Creative Practice: Design and facilitate rich encounters with materials, media and artistic

processes. Introduce children to diverse artistic techniques, practices, artists and forms of expression.

Encourage experimentation, imagination, risk-taking and creative problem-solving. Maintain the atelier as

an inspiring, organised and evolving learning environment, exploring sustainable, natural, recycled and

unconventional materials.

Collaboration & Inquiry: Collaborate with teachers to integrate art into their planning and identify

opportunities for artistic exploration within classroom inquiries. Co-design provocations emerging from

children's questions and interests. In partnership with the Pedagogista and Coordinators, meet with

classroom educators to plan, implement and support long-term, intentional research and project work.

Contribute an artistic perspective to curriculum development, support interdisciplinary projects, help

teachers recognise the Hundred Languages within everyday learning, and facilitate workshops and

professional development that build teachers' confidence with materials and creative languages.

Documentation & Making Learning Visible: Observe and document children's creative processes,

conversations, theories and discoveries. Use photographs, videos, children's words, artefacts, sketches and

written reflections to make thinking visible. Work with teachers and children to revisit documentation and

extend inquiry. Utilise documentation as a tool for reflection, assessment, and communication with parents

and the wider community. Contribute to exhibitions and displays that communicate the story and process of

learning, rather than simply displaying finished artwork.

Environments & Materials: Collaborate with teachers and staff to design aesthetically pleasing, inspiring art

spaces, including thriving mini-atelier spaces in each classroom. Source and select open-ended materials,

maintain a well-stocked and accessible inventory of art supplies, and research new materials and resources

aligned with the Reggio Emilia experience.

Community, Events & Culture: Participate in the planning and organisation of school-wide events,

exhibitions and showcases highlighting children's artwork. Create visually appealing displays and

installations for school events, and coordinate art-related experiences and workshops during special

occasions and celebrations. Support parent ateliers, contribute to school publications, newsletters and

social media, build connections with artists, galleries and the wider creative community, and help strengthen

a culture where creativity belongs to everyone.

A recognised qualification in Teaching, Education or the Arts, in accordance with Vietnam regulations —

or a degree, diploma or significant professional experience in Visual Arts, Fine Arts, Design,

Photography, Sculpture, Ceramics, Illustration, Multimedia, Architecture or another relevant creative

discipline

Evidence of an active or established artistic practice, with experience across multiple artistic media

and materials

Experience working collaboratively with children or young people

Strong observation, assessment and documentation skills

Creativity, flexibility, and adaptability in designing and implementing developmentally appropriate

experiences

Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with confidence working within a multicultural

community

An advantage:

Experience with, or knowledge of, the Reggio Emilia approach and the Hundred Languages of Children

Knowledge of the New Zealand Curriculum

Experience working within an atelier or inquiry-based educational environment

Experience with pedagogical documentation

Experience designing installations, exhibitions or collaborative projects

International or intercultural experience
