Mô tả công việc
Reports to: General Manager, AED Vietnam (functional line to the Director, AED Global)
Position summary
The Structural Steel Tekla Designer is responsible for the accurate 3D modelling and detailing of structural steelwork in Tekla Structures for Australian projects, from model set-up through to issued shop detail, assembly and erection documentation. The role carries a strong quality-assurance emphasis — building, applying and improving the checklists and system processes that sit behind every job we issue.
Alongside the technical work, the role is a relationship and culture role. The person in this seat will engage directly with Australian clients, attend site and fabrication facilities, and bring what they learn back to the Vietnam team. They will be supported to develop leadership and management capability through AED's Udemy Business learning paths and our partnered coaching program, with a clear pathway toward leading a steel detailing team.
Key responsibility areas
1. Quality of design and detailing output
● Model structural steelwork accurately in Tekla Structures from engineering drawings, architectural documentation and client models.
● Produce complete, buildable documentation — single part and assembly drawings, erection and layout drawings, anchor bolt and setout plans, bills of material, and CNC/NC and DSTV outputs for fabrication.
● Detail to Australian codes and industry practice, including AS 4100, AS/NZS 5131 (construction category and fabrication tolerances), AS/NZS 1554 welding, AS/NZS 1252 bolting and relevant NCC requirements.
● Apply connection details consistently, and raise a clear, well-documented RFI rather than assuming when information is missing or conflicting.
● Check own work before it leaves the desk — quality is owned at the source, not delegated to the checker.
● Work with the engineer of record so jobs are issued as a complete package, including certification, wherever that is part of our scope.
● Take feedback from client checkers professionally, close the loop on every comment, and make sure the same comment does not come back twice.
2. Systems, standards and quality processes
● Build and maintain AED's steel detailing checklists, modelling standards, naming conventions, drawing templates and client-specific preference sheets.
● Capture each client's factory efficiencies, on-site preferences and detailing preferences, and turn them into documented standards the whole team can follow.
● Operate the internal QA workflow — self-check, peer check, coordinator sign-off — and record checks so they are auditable.
● Track errors and rework honestly, run root-cause analysis (5 Whys) on anything material, and close it out with a process change rather than a reminder.
● Contribute to job planning and output forecasting — realistic hours, realistic dates, early flags when something is drifting.
● Keep model and drawing revision control tight so everyone is working from the current issue.
3. Client relationships and Australian market engagement
● Be a first point of contact for Australian clients on technical and detailing matters — responsive, clear, and straight about what we can and cannot do.
● Travel to Australia periodically to attend client offices, fabrication workshops and construction sites; see how our documentation is actually used, and bring the lessons home.
● Build genuine working relationships with client detailers, checkers, fabricators and site crews — the kind where problems get raised early because the trust is there.
● Represent AED professionally and warmly. Our clients should finish a meeting feeling looked after, not just serviced.
● Feed client insight back into scope, pricing and process discussions with the Director and General Manager.
● Communicate in clear, plain English, verbally and in writing, with Australian clients.
4. Team culture and professional development
● Set the standard by example — the way this person works, checks, communicates and handles pressure becomes the team's benchmark.
● Mentor and up-skill detailers moving into structural steel: sit with them, review work with them, explain the why, not just the correction.
● Use AED's Udemy Business learning paths as a structured development tool — complete their own role-based path, and help build and refine the steel detailing path for others.
● Give feedback the AED way: warm accountability — high care and high standards together, never one at the cost of the other.
● Hold regular, genuine check-ins with team members on how they are travelling, not just what they have produced.
● Contribute to onboarding — flowcharts, training material, buddy support for new starters.
● Protect the culture: no blame games, no hiding mistakes, no judgement of people who ask questions.
5. Leadership growth and personal development
● Participate in AED's leadership development program, including the Leadership Participant Workbook and facilitated sessions.
● Work with AED's partnered coaches on leadership, communication and management capability, with individual coaching goals set and reviewed.
● Build management fundamentals — planning, delegation, difficult conversations, performance conversations, running an effective meeting.
● Own a personal development plan with the Director and General Manager, reviewed at least every six months.
● Grow toward leading a steel detailing team as the work volume supports it — this role is deliberately built as a pathway, not a ceiling.
