1. Position Purpose

Responsible for researching, evaluating, and developing tea raw materials to meet product requirements. The role works closely with R&D, Procurement, Quality, Manufacturing, and suppliers to ensure tea ingredients meet requirements for quality, sensory profile, consistency, supply availability, and cost.

The position serves as a key link between tea suppliers, raw materials, product development, and manufacturing.

2. Key Responsibilities

A. Tea Raw Material Research & Development

• Research and evaluate different types of tea from various origins, tea varieties, seasons, processing methods, and quality grades.
• Assess the technical and sensory characteristics of tea raw materials for different product applications.
• Develop and maintain technical specifications and databases for tea raw materials.
• Identify and recommend suitable tea raw materials based on product requirements and target sensory profiles.
• Research new tea sources and ingredients to support product innovation and raw material development.

B. Tea Sensory Evaluation & Testing

• Conduct tea tasting, cupping, and sensory evaluation of tea raw materials.
• Evaluate key sensory attributes, including liquor color, aroma, taste, body, astringency, bitterness, aftertaste, and overall profile.
• Test tea raw materials in product formulas and evaluate their impact on finished product quality.
• Compare different tea samples and recommend suitable materials based on quality, consistency, performance, and cost.
• Monitor and assess seasonal variations in tea raw material quality and sensory characteristics.

C. Supplier & Raw Material Development

• Work closely with Procurement and tea suppliers to develop and qualify suitable tea sources.
• Communicate technical requirements related to quality, specifications, volume, seasonality, processing, and supply capability.
• Participate in the evaluation and selection of new tea suppliers and raw materials.
• Visit tea-growing regions, processing facilities, and supplier sites when required to understand the raw material and processing conditions.
• Monitor raw material quality and work with suppliers to investigate and resolve quality or technical issues.

D. Product Development & Manufacturing Support

• Collaborate with R&D teams during the development and optimization of tea-based products.
• Support laboratory trials, pilot trials, scale-up, and technology transfer of tea raw materials into manufacturing.
• Work with Manufacturing to adjust processing parameters when changes in tea raw material characteristics affect product performance.
• Investigate and propose solutions for changes in color, aroma, taste, extraction performance, or product consistency.
• Monitor tea quality from incoming raw material through to the finished product.

E. Tea Technical Research & Knowledge Development

• Research tea-growing regions, tea varieties, harvesting seasons, and tea processing methods.
• Keep updated on new tea ingredients, technologies, suppliers, and market trends.
• Build and maintain a technical database covering tea raw materials, suppliers, origins, specifications, and sensory profiles.
• Provide technical insights and recommendations to support R&D, sourcing, raw material selection, and product development decisions.

Education & Experience

• Bachelor's degree or higher in Food Technology, Food Science, , Agriculture, R&D, or related fields.
• 3 years of relevant experience in one or more of the following areas: Tea R&D, Tea QC/QA
  • Sensory Evaluation
  • Raw Material / Ingredient Development
  • Supplier Quality / Technical
• Hands-on experience working with tea raw materials is highly preferred.

Technical Knowledge

• Good understanding of different types of tea and their raw material characteristics.
• Basic knowledge of tea origins, varieties, harvesting seasons, and processing methods.
• Experience or formal training in sensory evaluation and/or tea cupping.
• Ability to systematically evaluate and describe tea sensory characteristics.
• Understanding of food/beverage product development and manufacturing processes is an advantage.

Skills

• Strong sensory evaluation and raw material analytical skills.
• Good analytical thinking and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with R&D, Procurement, QA/QC, Manufacturing, and suppliers.
• Good communication and supplier management skills.
• Good command of English, especially for technical documents and communication.
• Willingness to travel to tea-growing areas, supplier sites, and manufacturing facilities when required.
