Lab Engineer for Faculty of Engineering and Computational Engineering study program

Job summary

Support the development and operation of the Laboratories of the COM study program and provide technical and administrative support to the Faculty of Engineering (0% teaching, 25% research, and 75% laboratory management, technical, and administrative support).

Major duties and responsibilities

Daily and Periodic Responsibilities – COM Laboratories (50%)

1. Assist in research, preparing research proposals: working on research project(s) assigned by the supervisor, and assisting in and contributing to the overall research of the research group.
2. Supervise all laboratory activities to ensure compliance with health and safety guidelines and maintaining a clean and orderly laboratory environment.
3. Maintain, repair, and troubleshoot machines, equipment, and lab facilities to ensure their safe and optimal operation.
4. Manage laboratory consumables and purchase requests for minor equipment
5. Document information by maintaining machine and equipment’s daily logs and lab activities record books
6. Provide guidance to students on how to use laboratory facilities in an appropriate and safe manner
7. Assist in students in projects, such as research projects
8. Support the procurement process of new equipment
9. Support acceptance tests of new equipment

Support for the FE – Laboratory management (25%)

1. Support the Faculty in coordinating the use of laboratories across study programs, including lab room scheduling and booking, maintaining the Faculty-wide inventory and asset register of laboratory equipment, and managing the Faculty’s laboratory equipment management system/application in coordination with IT, including system improvements based on the Faculty’s requirements.
2. Support the development and regular review of laboratory rules, standard operating procedures (SOPs), risk assessments, and safety inductions for Faculty laboratories
3. Support the Faculty in planning laboratory upgrades and investments, including preparing technical specifications, and in preparing laboratory-related documentation for quality assurance, audits, and program accreditation

Support for the FE – Website, events, marketing, student and admin activities (25%)

1. Support the maintenance and updating of the Faculty of Engineering website, social media channels and related web-based system, including digitizing and improving administrative and operational processes currently handled manually, as well as supporting Faculty social media content where required.
2. Prepare photos, videos, and technical content that showcase the laboratories, research, and student projects for use in Faculty marketing and admissions materials
3. Support the planning and organisation of Faculty and VGU events, such as lab tours, workshops, seminars, guest lectures, industry visits, Open Days, Education Fairs, conferences, and outreach activities, in cooperation with relevant VGU units.
4. Support the Faculty in managing IT-related resources, including coordinating with IT to monitor licensed software and software provided by external companies, and to maintain and manage computers and other IT equipment used by the Faculty.
5. Support student activities such as student clubs, technical competitions, hackathons, and extracurricular projects that use Faculty laboratories, by providing technical guidance, arranging lab access, and ensuring safe use of equipment
6. Act as invigilator for exams of all study programs, if required

Other duties

1. Perform other Faculty-related duties as assigned by the Vice Dean responsible for finance and facility, or the supervisor.

Qualification

Bachelor's degree in Computational Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or related disciplines

Knowledge

Good knowledge in related disciplines

Skills

1. Good in English both in writing and orally (at least equivalent to IELTS 6.0)
2. Good manners of expression, good writing skills, and organizational skills.
3. Creative, initiative, can-do attitude.
4. Advanced skills in Linux/Unix and Windows operating systems administration.
5. Strong understanding of networking administration, e.g., routing, switching, TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP configurations.
6. Advanced skills in CAE engineering simulation software, e.g., ANSYS, OpenFOAM, Ansys Fluent.
7. Basic skills in HPC cluster setup, management, and job scheduling systems, e.g., Slurm Workload Manager.
8. Good understanding of parallel programming with OpenMP and MPI, e.g., OMP4PY, MPI4PY.
9. Basic skills in programming languages including C++, Python, Fortran, and MATLAB.
10. Basic skills in website content management, social media, and photo/video editing are an advantage.
11. Be able to work efficiently, independently, and self-organized.

Experience

1. Experience in teaching support is preferable
2. Experience in working with industry is preferable

8:30 – 16:30 Monday - Friday
