About the Role 

We are seeking a Principal Engineer to serve as the most senior technical authority for our Backbase Banking Platform. In this role, you will define the technical vision, architecture, and engineering standards for our digital banking channels built on Backbase, guiding multiple squads to deliver secure, scalable, and high-performing solutions for millions of customers. 
This is a hands-on technical leadership position. You will set direction rather than manage people directly, acting as a force multiplier across the Technology Division.

Key Responsibilities 

Technical Leadership & Architecture

• Own the end-to-end technical architecture of the Backbase platform, including the Digital Banking Services (DBS) backend,
• Identity, Entitlements, and the Web/Mobile front-end (Backbase Design System / Journeys).
• Define the target architecture and multi-year technical roadmap, aligning platform evolution with the bank's business strategy.
• Lead high-impact technical decisions: build vs. buy vs. configure, integration patterns, upgrade strategy, and management of technical debt. 

Backbase Platform Engineering 

• Guide teams in extending and customizing Backbase capabilities (custom Journeys, Service SDK, custom services on Backbase's Spring Boot–based framework).
• Establish best practices for Backbase upgrades, version management, and alignment with the vendor's release model to avoid heavy customization lock-in.
• Oversee integration between Backbase and core banking, card systems, payment rails, and other backend systems via APIs and event-driven patterns. 

Standards, Quality & Governance

• Define engineering standards for code quality, security, performance, CI/CD, observability, and testing across all Backbase squads.
• Champion secure-by-design principles and ensure compliance with banking regulations and standards (e.g., data protection, PCI-DSS, local regulatory requirements).
• Conduct architecture and code reviews for critical components, and resolve the most complex production and performance issues. 

Mentorship & Influence

• Mentor senior and staff engineers, raising the technical bar across the organization.
• Communicate complex technical trade-offs clearly to both engineering teams and non-technical stakeholders, including senior leadership.
• Collaborate with Product, Enterprise Architecture, Security, and Infrastructure teams to deliver cohesive solutions. 

Your Skills and Experience

Required Qualifications 

• 5+ years of software engineering experience, with several years in a senior/staff/principal-level technical role.
• Proven, hands-on experience designing and delivering solutions on the Backbase Engagement Banking Platform (DBS, Journeys, Identity, Entitlements).
• Deep expertise in Java and the Spring / Spring Boot ecosystem, on which Backbase services are built.
• Strong background in microservices architecture, RESTful APIs, event-driven design (e.g., Kafka), and system integration in a complex enterprise environment.
• Solid experience with front-end technologies relevant to Backbase (Angular / Web Components / Backbase Design System).
• Experience with cloud and container platforms (Kubernetes, Docker) and CI/CD pipelines.
• Strong understanding of security, performance, scalability, and resilience in mission-critical systems.
• Excellent communication skills in English and the ability to influence across teams. 

Preferred Qualifications 

• Prior experience delivering digital banking or fintech platforms at scale. 
• Familiarity with core banking integration and payment / card systems. 
• Backbase certifications or demonstrable participation in large-scale Backbase implementations and upgrades. 
• Experience working in Agile / Scrum squad-based delivery models.
