Purpose Of The Job:

Design and optimize the mechanical side of production tooling, fixtures, jigs and line equipment for Boyd's thermal management products – creating 3D/2D drawings to standard, selecting the right materials, applying Lean principles, and working with Electrical and Test Engineers to deliver process automation that improves quality, cycle time, productivity and cost.

Principal Accountabilities/Main Tasks:

• Engineering Drawings

- Create and maintain 3D models and 2D drawings in line with company and international drafting standards (ISO / ASME, GD&T).

- Prepare BOMs for fabricated and standard parts and manage drawing revisions and release.

• Tooling, Fixture & Jig Design

- Design tooling, fixtures and jigs for machining, assembly, brazing/welding, testing and inspection processes.

- Select suitable materials, tolerances and surface treatments for each part based on function, durability and cost.

- Coordinate fabrication with in-house machining or external vendors; lead try-out, validation and buy-off.

• Line Equipment Optimization

- Analyze mechanical issues on production equipment and redesign for reliability, safety, ergonomics and cycle time.

- Implement and verify mechanical modifications and improvements on running lines.

• Lean Design & Improvement

- Apply Lean concepts (waste elimination, poka-yoke, SMED, ergonomics) in every tooling and equipment design.

- Support Kaizen and productivity improvement activities with Production, Process and IE teams.

• Process Automation with EE/TE

- Work with Electrical and Test Engineers to develop automation concepts for manual and semi-automated processes.

- Own the mechanical design of automation equipment – layout, structure, motion and pneumatic components, guarding – and agree interfaces with the electrical design.

- Support machine build, installation and joint dry-run / wet-run testing until handover to Production.

• Documentation, Cost & Safety

- Prepare design documentation, spare-part lists and maintenance guidelines; keep the tooling/fixture register up to date.

- Source standard components and evaluate supplier quotations to achieve cost-effective designs.

- Ensure designs comply with machine safety and EHS requirements.

• Perform other duties as assigned by the line manager.

Education:

Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field

Skills/Knowledge/Experience – Required:

• Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience in mechanical design of tooling, fixtures, jigs or automation / special-purpose machines (SPM) in a manufacturing environment.

• CAD & Drawing Standards: Proficient in 3D CAD (e.g., SolidWorks, Inventor or Creo) and 2D drafting (AutoCAD); able to produce manufacturing drawings to standard (ISO / ASME), including GD&T, tolerances, fits and surface finish callouts.

• Materials: Solid understanding of engineering materials and their differences – steels and tool steels, aluminum, copper, stainless steel and engineering plastics (e.g., POM, PEEK, Bakelite, ESD-safe materials) – and how to select them for strength, wear, thermal, corrosion and cost requirements, including heat treatment and surface finishing.

• Manufacturing Processes: Good knowledge of machining (CNC milling/turning), sheet metal and welding processes, design for manufacturability (DFM), and standard mechanical components (e.g., MISUMI, SMC, CKD – cylinders, linear guides, bearings, clamps).

• Lean Concepts: Understanding of Lean principles and their application in design – waste elimination, poka-yoke / error-proofing, ergonomics and quick changeover (SMED).

• Automation Basics: Working knowledge of pneumatics, motion components and sensors to define mechanical concepts and collaborate effectively with Electrical Engineers.

• Language: Good English for reading and writing technical documents and communicating with internal teams and suppliers.

• Personal Attributes: Logical problem-solver; hands-on and detail-oriented; responsible, proactive and able to meet project deadlines.

Preferred:

• Industry: Experience in thermal management, liquid cooling, precision mechanics, electronics or semiconductor manufacturing; experience in FDI companies.

• Fixture Types: Experience designing brazing, welding, assembly, leak/pressure test or inspection fixtures.

• Analysis: Basic FEA / simulation (e.g., SolidWorks Simulation, ANSYS) and tolerance stack-up analysis.

• Continuous Improvement: Exposure to Kaizen, 5S, Six Sigma or VSM projects.
