The role

You are the technical owner of everything Celesnity puts on a machine: sensor nodes, edge gateways, firmware and the data contract they deliver. That covers 20 year old machines with no controller at all and modern lines running Siemens PLCs and SCADA.

This is a player and coach role. You will design circuits, write firmware and hold the oscilloscope yourself, while leading our hardware engineers and interns and training our forward deployed engineers (FDEs) to install and commission your devices. You report to Bill Nguyen, Co-founder and CTO, and work daily with our research, software and deployment teams.

Our devices stay Celesnity property and are rented to customers for the life of the contract. Reliability, remote management and field serviceability are therefore commercial requirements, and every design must hit a device cost in the low hundreds of US dollars.

What you will build

Electrical and hardware design

- Own schematics, component selection and PCB design for sensor nodes and edge gateways, from first prototype to production revision.

- Design for factory electrical reality: 24 V DC control circuits, 220/380 V three phase supplies, isolation, surge, ESD and EMI protection, DIN rail mounting, and IP65 or better enclosures for heat, steam, humidity, dust and washdown.

- Select and integrate sensing: current transformers and power meters for energy, accelerometers for vibration, temperature, pressure, flow and humidity, 4 to 20 mA and 0 to 10 V analogue signals, and digital I/O for machine states.

- Retrofit without intrusion: capture data without altering the customer's machine control or voiding equipment warranties.

Firmware

- Write production firmware in C and C++ on microcontrollers (ESP32, STM32, nRF or similar) and on embedded Linux for gateways.

- Build drivers, board support packages and RTOS applications (FreeRTOS or Zephyr) that sample each signal at the rate the model needs, from 1 Hz machine states to kHz vibration.

- Process at the edge: filtering, feature extraction (RMS, FFT), buffering and compression, and edge inference where it pays for itself.

- Implement secure boot, signed firmware, device identity, encrypted transport and over the air updates with rollback.

Industrial integration

- Read from machines and control systems over Modbus RTU and TCP, RS-485, CAN, OPC UA and MQTT, including PLC families common in our markets (Siemens, Mitsubishi, Omron, Delta, Schneider).

- At modern plants, connect to existing SCADA, historians and meters where the data already exists, rather than adding devices for the sake of it.

- Work alongside customer electricians and maintenance teams, safely and within their permit and lockout procedures.

Data quality for the world model

This is what makes the role different from a typical IoT job. Dashboards tolerate gaps and drift; a world model learns from them.

- Define with our research team what each signal must capture: sampling rate, resolution, units, calibration and metadata.

- Guarantee time alignment across devices and streams (NTP or PTP, drift monitoring) so machine events line up with voice and vision events.

- Store and forward through network outages without losing or duplicating data, and flag bad data at the source.

- Own the data contract between devices and our event log, together with the software team.

Fleet, deployment and production

- Design installation kits and commissioning procedures that a trained FDE can follow on site without you.

- Build remote health monitoring and diagnostics for every deployed device.

- Run production test, provisioning, flashing and calibration; manage suppliers, contract manufacturers, BOM cost and supply risk.

- Lead our certification path: Vietnamese standards first, then CE and UKCA for Europe and the UK, with OT security aligned to IEC 62443 and our ISO 27001 work.

Leadership

- Set hardware and firmware standards, code review, documentation and hardware in the loop test benches.

- Hire and mentor hardware engineers and interns, and train each FDE cohort on our devices.

- Make honest build or buy decisions: off the shelf wherever it is good enough, custom only where it creates a real advantage.

Preferred Qualifications:

- 5+ years building embedded or electronic products, including at least one you took from prototype to devices running in the field.

- Deep electrical and electronic fundamentals: analogue and digital circuits, power supplies, grounding, isolation and signal integrity. You can explain why a circuit fails, not only that it does.

- Industrial electrical competence: three phase power, motors, inverters (VFDs), contactors, sensors and control panels, and the discipline to work safely around live equipment.

- Expert C and C++ firmware on microcontrollers, with RTOS and embedded Linux experience.

- Schematic and PCB design in KiCad, Altium or similar, plus board bring up and debugging with oscilloscope, logic analyser and JTAG or SWD.

- Hands on industrial protocols: Modbus and RS-485 at minimum, and at least one of CAN, OPC UA or PLC communication.

- Connectivity over Wi-Fi, Ethernet and 4G/LTE, and MQTT into a cloud backend.

- Python for test automation, tooling and data analysis.

- Comfort on a factory floor, and the judgement to earn the trust of a plant's maintenance team.

- Working English and Vietnamese

Strong signals

- You have built condition monitoring, energy monitoring or industrial IoT products that customers paid for.

- Vibration analysis and signal processing (FFT, envelope analysis) for rotating equipment.

- Edge AI on Jetson, i.MX, Rockchip or similar, or TinyML on microcontrollers.

- High rate data acquisition and precise time synchronisation (PTP, GPS timing).

- Secure elements, TPMs and secure provisioning at scale.

- Certification and EMC testing experience: CE, UKCA, FCC, IEC 61010, IEC 62443.

- Products taken through contract manufacturing in Vietnam, China or Southeast Asia.

- Work with ML or research teams on data used for training models.

- Robotics, motion control or actuator experience; we are developing an adaptive robotic workcell.

- You have founded something, or been early at a startup, and know what ownership costs.
